One lakh vacancies in Switzerland, open labor market for foreigners

According to various experts, including the Swiss Employers Association (UPS), the main reason behind this situation is demographic change. Every year in Europe, fewer young people are joining the labor market than retirees, along with a decline in the number of employees.

Another reason for the labor shortage in Switzerland is the growth of the economy, which now needs 30 percent more people than 20 years ago. This has resulted in a major shortage of workers, especially in the health and catering sectors. According to Manpower Report, Switzerland currently has around 1 lakh vacancies.

Several solutions have been proposed to meet this need. Swiss experts have suggested the use of foreign workers to fill this gap. The UNIA trade union emphasized the recruitment of workers for the Swiss economy and called for new arrivals to be employed in training.

According to research carried out by Swiss employers, experts in the professional sector, if no measures are taken to recruit labor by 2025, it could cost around 60 billion Swiss francs. Switzerland has an area of about 41,285 square kilometers and a current population of 89,61,000. Population decline is one of the country’s challenges.

Swiss employers’ associations and unions have also proposed a solution to the shortage, saying the recognition of foreign diplomas would help foreigners join the Swiss labor market and overcome the shortage. Unions believe opening up the labor market to women, allowing them to hire more and fill vacancies, could be a key to the solution. Another proposal states that increasing employment opportunities for disabled people and reducing bureaucracy is very important.

Meanwhile, various medical companies have called for better professional training to combat staff shortages in Switzerland. Various healthcare companies have criticized the rigorous testing of doctors while hiring. They believe that changes in the Swiss labor market are necessary despite the attractive salaries offered to avoid further deterioration of the situation and to improve their own sector.

In this situation, Switzerland can be an attractive labor market for Bangladeshis living legally in various European countries.
